The death toll in a multi-storey building collapse in Maharashtra has risen to 15. The death toll rose after two more bodies were found during a search today. A five-storey building in the Raigad Mahad Tehsil area collapsed around 6.50 pm on Monday. The NDRF team rushed to the rescue from Pune soon after learning of the tragedy. The rescue operation, which started that evening, continues today. Authorities had earlier said several people were trapped in the rubble. Many of them were found dead.
There were 47 flats in the building. According to reports, the building completely collapsed like a lottery. District Collector Nidhi Chaudhary said about 70 residents had been evacuated from the building just before the tragedy. The preliminary conclusion is that substandard materials were used for the construction of the building. Based on this, an FIR has been registered against the builders, engineers, and contractors, the Collector said.
The report said that despite the heavy rains and inclement weather, the locals had come together to rescue the victims. The rescue squad wasn’t immediately available for comment. However, the search mission is still ongoing.
