The Union Home Ministry has launched a mobile app for registering applications under the Citizenship Amendment Act. Android App CAA-2019 was launched on Google Play Store after the launch of Indian Citizenship Online Portal on February 13.
MHA tweeted that ‘CAA-2019′ mobile app for applying under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 has become operational. Applicants can download the app from Google Play Store.’ The app can be downloaded from the Play Store as well as from the website. Currently the iOS version of the app is not released. You can also apply on the official website indiancitizenshiponline.nic.in.
The portal and app were launched after the notification of rules for implementation of CAA on Monday. CAA will allow citizenship to persecuted minorities from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. The six minority communities covered by the Act are Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian from Muslim-majority countries. Only those who entered India from these countries before December 31, 2014 and have resided in India for at least 7 years can apply.
An applicant who wants to apply for Indian citizenship under the CAA needs to first register on the app or portal using an email id or phone number. After following the registration and login, some questions need to be answered. Based on the responses, the portal/app will provide the relevant application to be filled.
Along with the application, the applicant has to submit soft copies of certain documents. These documents include a copy of the country of origin’s passport, registration certificate or residential permit, birth certificate, school certificate or education certificate, government identification document, any license or certificate, land or lease documents, or any document proving Applicant’s parents or grandparents were citizens of all three countries, or any relevant document proving that the applicant is from three counties. Except the registration certificate or residential permit, all other documents must be from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
The applicant is required to upload a copy of any documents proving that he entered India on or before 31.12.2014. The documents are listed in Schedule 1B of the Act published in the Gazette of India.
Apart from these two documents, an affidavit from an Indian citizen attesting to the character of the applicant along with an affidavit confirming the correctness of the statements made in the application and a declaration from the applicant that he has sufficient knowledge of a language as specified in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. The formats of affidavits and applications are given in the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024.
