As the Waqf Amendment Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha, the residents of Munambam celebrated by bursting firecrackers at the protest site. The discussions in the Lok Sabha regarding the Waqf Amendment Bill were watched live by the protestors on a television set up at the protest site in Munambam. The celebrations included slogans in support of the Prime Minister, the central government, and the BJP. With this, a long-standing issue of the Munambam residents has finally been resolved.
The response of the Munambam residents is now gaining attention. One of the protestors stated that the BJP government had taken a favorable stance on the matter. “We thank the central government and the BJP. The developments in the Lok Sabha are a major setback for those who tried to deceive us. The Waqf Board now has no option but to comply. Our only hope was the amendment bill introduced by the central government. We have something special prepared for the MPs returning from Delhi, and our response will be political.”
The protestors pointed out that MPs like Hibi Eden were against them, whereas even Kiran Rijiju, who did not personally know them, spoke in their favor. They questioned what their own MP, Hibi Eden, had done for them. The Union Minister for Minority Affairs, Kiran Rijiju, stated while introducing the bill that with the new law in place, the residents of Munambam would get back their land. “This is a victory for Indian democracy. If Munambam has won, it means India has won,” said the people of Munambam.
