Delhi Assembly Elections: Single Phase Voting on February 5, Counting on February 8

The Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar, announced in a press conference that the Delhi Assembly elections will be held in a single phase on February 5, covering all 70 constituencies. The counting of votes is scheduled for February 8.

The election is expected to witness a triangular contest between the BJP, Congress, and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). AAP aims for a third consecutive victory, while Congress is eager to regain control of the national capital.

The tenure of the current assembly ends on February 23. As per the latest data, Delhi has 1.55 crore voters, including 84,49,645 male voters and 71,73,952 female voters. In the last election, held on February 8, polling turnout was 62.82%. The AAP won 63 out of 70 seats, while the BJP secured 7 seats. The results were declared on February 11, and the second Kejriwal government assumed office on February 16.

The Chief Election Commissioner expressed concerns over allegations of EVM tampering and the spread of misinformation, calling it “painful.” He emphasized that freedom of speech does not justify the dissemination of false information. Rajiv Kumar clarified that all allegations of EVM manipulation are baseless and that the Election Commission has answers to every query raised. He added that such unfounded claims have unnecessarily delayed vote counting processes in the past.

The CEC assured that no voter is removed from the rolls without proper justification and reiterated the Commission’s commitment to addressing all grievances responsibly.
