Hindu organizations have raised allegations that the Erumeli Jamaat is obstructing efforts to standardize prices on essential items for Ayyappa devotees in Erumeli, claiming that the Jamaat is involved in price manipulation to overcharge pilgrims. The Jamaat, however, opposes price standardization, arguing that it would lead to significant financial losses for local businesses.
The high prices for items required for Sabarimala rituals, especially those used in the Petta Thullal ceremony, such as kachha cloth, gada (mace), and swords, have been a major concern for devotees. Hindu organizations report that prices are set at more than double the usual rates, which they claim exploits the influx of pilgrims. This alleged price exploitation has led these groups to warn of potential protests if fair pricing isn’t implemented.
Erumeli holds special significance as it is a key stop on the pilgrimage route to Sabarimala, one of the most revered destinations for Hindu devotees, and is often referred to as the “gateway” to Sabarimala.
