India is significantly boosting its military capabilities with the addition of 100 K-9 Vajra self-propelled artillery guns, 12 Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jets, and 100 155mm guns to the armed forces. The Central Government’s Cabinet Security Committee has approved a defense procurement worth ₹21,000 crore.
As part of this approval, ₹7,600 crore has been allocated for automating the 100 K-9 Vajra artillery systems. Notably, the entire expenditure for this procurement will be made domestically, in Indian Rupees, ensuring local economic benefits.
Under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will manufacture 12 Sukhoi-30MKI aircraft using Russian technology at an estimated cost of ₹13,500 crore. Each Sukhoi fighter jet is projected to cost over ₹1,000 crore. HAL’s Nashik Division will lead the production, incorporating 62.6% indigenous components.
Similarly, 60% of the components for the K-9 Vajra artillery systems will be domestically produced. These world-class artillery guns are being manufactured by L&T as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.
