Madras High Court rejects former DGP’s bail plea seeking exemption from surrender in sexual assault case

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has rejected the bail plea of ​​the former DGP seeking exemption from surrendering himself before the trial court in the sexual harassment case. The Madras High Court said that if the bail plea is to be considered, the court should surrender. The court also rejected the request to suspend the sentence.

Justice M Dandapani, who heard the case, clarified that the punishment proceedings cannot be suspended or the trial court can be exempted from surrendering. The court observed that everyone is equal before the court and why should this petitioner be given special treatment.

In 2021, during the election campaign of the then Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Rajesh Das sexually assaulted a female IPS officer. On 16 June 2023, Villupuram CJM Rajesh Das was found guilty and sentenced to three years in prison and a fine of Rs 10,000. In February 2024, Villupuram Principal District Court upheld his conviction.
