Mark Carney Becomes Canada’s New Prime Minister, Succeeding Justin Trudeau

OTTAWA: Canada’s Liberal Party on Sunday overwhelmingly elected Mark Carney as the country’s next prime minister. The former central banker, who has taken a defiant stance against threats from US President Donald Trump, won 85.9 per cent of the votes cast by the Liberal Party, according to final tallies.

Carney will take over from outgoing party leader Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the coming days, but he may not be able to hold the position for long.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation in January after a sharp decline in the Commons. The Canada-US trade dispute has intensified. Carney, a staunch Trump critic, takes office as prime minister. Carney, the designated prime minister, responded that tariffs against the US will continue.
