Meet Pratap Chandra Sarangi, the leader who travels around on a bicycle

BJP MPs Pratap Chandra Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput were injured in the violence caused by Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi during the clash in Parliament. Pratap Chandra Sarangi was shifted to the hospital in a wheelchair with blood flowing from his eyes.

Sarangi is an MP from Balasore, Odisha. He was the Minister of State in charge of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries in the second Narendra Modi government. He has also been a member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly twice. His constituency is in the Vanavasi area of Balasore. He is known nationally for his single-teacher schools. He has implemented many schemes for the upliftment of tribals.

He entered the public service after completing his graduation. A spiritual seeker since childhood, Sarangi was interested in becoming a part of the Ramakrishna Math. He once visited the Vellore Math of the Ramakrishna Mission in West Bengal to take up sannyasa. However, since his mother was alive, the monks advised him to focus on public service.

That’s how he returned to the villages. He started as a district worker of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Later, he expanded his activities to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and other Hindu organizations. Even today, the people of Odisha see the leader, who is an ordinary person among ordinary people living in a thatched house and traveling on a bicycle, as a sage.

He is also a leader who revolutionized primary education in rural areas through the innovative concept of community-funded single-teacher schools. He entered the field of public service after completing his graduation. Sarangi was a spiritual seeker since childhood. He wanted to become a monk in the Ramakrishna Math.

He made several visits to the Belur Math, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Ashram in Howrah, West Bengal. The monks of the Math came to know about Sarangi’s wish. But they found out that Sarangi’s widowed mother was still alive. They insisted that he go back and serve her. After returning to his village, he became involved in various social activities.
