The online market for Sivakasi fireworks has opened ahead of the Vishu season. Large quantities of fireworks are being transported from Tamil Nadu to Kerala through online booking. Reports indicate that old stock, originally manufactured for Diwali and other festivals, is being sold online without following any safety standards.
These fireworks are being delivered via parcel vans and courier vehicles. Fireworks traders claim that this practice is causing significant tax losses for the government. Despite a court ruling in 2018 banning the online sale of fireworks, the business continues to thrive illegally. The fireworks sold online are reportedly of substandard quality. They are being transported like regular parcels, using buses and parcel lorries, before reaching consumers.
With the rising temperatures in Palakkad, the increased pressure makes the risk of fire accidents significantly higher, posing a serious safety threat. However, selling fireworks through legal channels involves strict regulations, including approvals from the fire and explosives departments, as well as secure storage facilities. Obtaining a license requires compliance with multiple safety protocols and payment of substantial fees to the government.
For traders who follow legal procedures, the illegal online market is proving to be a major setback. Fireworks dealers are urging the government to take strict action against these unlawful and hazardous online sales.
