Prime Minister inaugurates country’s first underwater metro in Kolkata

Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the country’s first underwater metro to the country. The Prime Minister flagged off the Howrah Maidan-Esplanode section of the Kolkata Metro. The inauguration ceremony was held at a public event in Kolkata.

This underwater service is located in the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section, part of the East-West Corridor of the Kolkata Metro in West Bengal. The route passes under the river Hooghly. This metro line connects Howrah and Salt Lake, the twin cities of the West Bengal capital. The route has three underground stations.

The metro will cover a distance of 520 meters below the Hooghly river in 45 seconds. Howrah is the lowest metro station above sea level. The station is 33 meters below the surface. The length of East-West Metro is 16.6 km. Its second section is Howrah Maidan-Esplanade.
