Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences on the demise of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. In a message on social media, the Prime Minister expressed deep sorrow over the loss of one of the nation’s most eminent leaders.
“Dr. Singh served in various key positions, including Finance Minister, leaving an indelible mark on our economic policies over the years. His interventions in Parliament were always visionary. As Prime Minister, he made tremendous efforts to improve people’s lives,” the Prime Minister wrote in his message.
Manmohan Singh passed away at AIIMS in Delhi due to a respiratory illness. A visionary leader, he guided the nation out of an economic crisis and steered it towards growth.
Dr. Manmohan Singh was born on September 26, 1932, in Punjab. He earned his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in economics from Punjab University and pursued further studies at Cambridge and Oxford Universities. In 1971, he joined the Indian government as an economic advisor in the Ministry of Commerce. In 1972, he became the Chief Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Finance. From 1982 to 1985, he served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, followed by two years as the head of the Planning Commission. In 1987, Dr. Singh was honored with the Padma Vibhushan for his contributions to the nation.
