Sanjay Mukherjee is the new DGP in West Bengal

Kolkata: The police chief has been changed for the second time in West Bengal. This is the second change in 24 hours. Yesterday, the Central Election Commission had directed the Bengal government to replace DGP Rajeev Kumar.

Following this, Vivek Sahai, who was the Director General of Home Guards, was appointed as the new Chief of Police. But the Election Commission appointed Sanjay Mukherjee as the new Chief of Police replacing Vivek Sahai.

The Election Commission has informed that the appointment will be effective immediately. Sanjay Mukherjee, a 1989 batch IPS officer, is currently serving as the crime branch chief.

The Election Commission has directed that DGP Rajeev Kumar, who is known to be close to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, be removed from the post of Chief of Police and appointed to a post unrelated to the elections. The Election Commission had also ordered the transfer of home secretaries in six states.
