Thiruvananthapuram:Thiruvananthapuram: Reports indicate that Sherin, the accused in the Bhaskara Karanavar murder case, received extraordinary consideration. The decision to grant Sherin’s release was made at an unusually fast pace. Within a month, the recommendation reached the Cabinet through the Home Department. Many deserving individuals were overlooked, granting a special remission only to Sherin. Even inmates who have served 20 years and suffer from illnesses continue to remain in prison. The problems Sherin had caused in various prisons were not considered.
Bhaskara Karanar murder case convict Sherin was the only one who was granted amnesty without considering the recommendation of the prison advisory committees to release those who have served more than 25 years in prison. The cabinet meeting took a hasty decision based on the recommendation given by the Kannur prison advisory committee in December. The amnesty was also given without considering the problems Sherin had caused in various prisons.
The release also shows the continuation of the benefits that Sherin received in prisons. The decision to release Sherin, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, was made on the grounds that she had completed 14 years of her sentence. However, those who had completed 25 and 20 years of imprisonment did not get this benefit. The recommendations of the prison advisory committees, which state that many of them are sick, have not yet been considered. The decisions are being taken on the recommendations given twice by the advisory committees of Poojappuram, Viyyur and Nettukaltheri prisons. The decision on Sherin’s release was also taken quickly. The Kannur prison advisory committee put forward the recommendation to release Sherin in December.
Within a month, the recommendation reached the cabinet through the DGP of the prison and the decision was made through the Home Department. Normally, when granting leniency, the activities of the convicts in prison are also considered. However, despite Sherin constantly causing problems with fellow prisoners and officials in all the prisons she stayed in, none of that was considered. The police report and probation report are in Sherin’s favor. There are indications that Sherin has also received the support of some ministers in the cabinet. Basit Ali, who was sentenced with Sherin, has been transferred to an open prison considering his good behavior. Basit Ali was not considered for release. If the governor also accepts the cabinet meeting recommendation, Sherin can be released.
