25 people suspected of consuming spurious liquor died in Kallukurichi in Tamil Nadu. More than sixty people, including women, are undergoing treatment in various hospitals. The District Collector was transferred and the Superintendent of Police was suspended.
They consumed liquor from Karunapuram in Kallukurichi. Police arrested Govindarajan who sold fake liquor in the area. 200 liters of fake liquor was recovered from him. The Tamil Nadu government has confirmed the presence of methanol in alcohol. Collector Shravan Kumar Jetavath was transferred after the disaster. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin also ordered the suspension of district police chief Samay Singh Meena.
Most of the victims are porters and daily wage earners. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has said that all those behind the fake liquor incident will be arrested. It was also clarified that action will be taken against the officials who failed to prevent such an incident.
CBCID also announced an investigation into the liquor disaster. All the officers including the Deputy Superintendent of Police Anti-Narcotics Division have been temporarily suspended.
