The interim government in Bangladesh has removed Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from the title of Father of the Nation. The political intervention by rewriting history is reflected in the textbooks for the new academic year. The change in the textbooks reflects the continuation of the new government’s actions to make the Awami League irrelevant.
On March 27, 1971, most newspapers around the world reported Mujib’s declaration of independence on the 26th. Textbook reformers say that the text was removed because they found it to be untrue that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was arrested by the Pakistani army, had sent a message declaring independence via wire.
The interim government that came into power after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country on August 5, 2024, decided to remove Mujibur Rahman’s image from the notes. It also canceled the public holiday that had been declared on August 15, the day Mujibur Rahman was assassinated.
Ziaur Rahman was a Bangladeshi military officer who served as the sixth President of Bangladesh from 1977 until his assassination in 1981.
