The name of Justice Bhushan R. Gavai has been recommended as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). The Supreme Court has forwarded this recommendation to the Law Ministry.
Current Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who will retire on May 13, made this recommendation. As per protocol, the sitting Chief Justice nominates the most senior judge as their successor.
Earlier, the Law Ministry had officially requested Chief Justice Khanna to announce his successor, marking the beginning of the appointment process.
