BJP Receives ₹2,244 Crore in Donations for 2023-24, Congress Receives ₹288.9 Crore

Delhi: In the 2023-24 financial year, the BJP received ₹2,244 crore in donations from individuals, trusts, and corporate entities, with contributions starting at ₹20,000 and above. This is more than three times the donations the party received in the previous year (2022-23). Meanwhile, the Congress received ₹288.9 crore in donations in 2023-24, compared to ₹79.9 crore in the previous year.

According to the Election Commission’s website, the BJP received ₹723.6 crore in donations from the Prudent Electoral Trust, while the Congress received ₹156.4 crore from the same source. In 2023-24, one-third of BJP’s donations and over half of Congress’ donations came from the Prudent Electoral Trust.

In 2022-23, major contributors to Prudent Electoral Trust included Megha Engin & Infra Limited, Serum Institute, ArcelorMittal Group, and Bharti Airtel. However, the total donations received by both BJP and Congress do not include those received through electoral bonds, as these details are only disclosed by political parties in their annual audit reports.

In February 2024, the Supreme Court had struck down the Electoral Bond Scheme. Some regional parties voluntarily disclosed the donations received through electoral bonds in their 2023-24 reports. The BRS reported receiving ₹495.5 crore through electoral bonds, DMK received ₹60 crore, YSR Congress received ₹121.5 crore, and JMM received ₹11.5 crore.
