Former Karnataka Chief Minister SM Krishna Passes Away

Former Union Minister for External Affairs, Maharashtra Governor, and Karnataka Chief Minister S.M. Krishna (92) passed away. He died at around 3 a.m. today due to age-related illnesses. Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna, known as S.M. Krishna, was a senior leader from Karnataka and a former member of the Indian National Congress.

He served as India’s Minister of External Affairs from 2009 to 2012, Governor of Maharashtra (2004–2008), Chief Minister of Karnataka (1999–2004), and was a member of the Lok Sabha three times and the Rajya Sabha twice.

Krishna’s political career began in 1962 when he contested as an independent candidate from Maddur in the assembly elections and won. In 1967, he contested again from Maddur on a Praja Socialist Party ticket but was defeated. In 1968, he became a member of the Lok Sabha for the first time, contesting a by-election in Mandya on a PSP ticket. He joined the Congress in 1971.

On January 30, 2017, he resigned from the Congress Working Committee and left the Congress party. Later, in March 2017, he joined the BJP and remained associated with it.
