The central government has started the construction of a border fence along the Myanmar border. The first phase of fencing will cover 83 kilometers in Arunachal Pradesh, and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has been tasked with the construction.
The government’s move follows reports of increased arms and drug smuggling through Myanmar into India. In response to this, the Ministry of Home Affairs recently requested the states of Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh to expedite the fencing project.
India shares a 1,643-kilometer-long border with Myanmar, with Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Mizoram (510 km), Manipur (398 km), and Nagaland (215 km) sharing the boundary. The Home Minister, Amit Shah, had announced months ago that fencing would be constructed along the entire border. The project has been allocated a budget of ₹31,000 crores.
