Punjab to provide free smartphones to 1.78 lakh students

The Government of Punjab distributes smartphones to all Class XII students in the State to ensure online learning and access to school information. The project will be inaugurated tomorrow. The government has planned such a scheme as the lockdown has delayed the opening of educational institutions. Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said the government was fulfilling its promise to the people, especially the youth, by implementing the scheme.

The project will be inaugurated in 26 locations, including all district headquarters, major cities and towns, as Kovid restrictions are in place. Amarinder Singh said it was to prevent people from crowding for the event. Only 15 students from all cities will attend the event. The Chief Minister has written to all the Deputy Commissioners in this regard. Earlier, the government had said it would provide smartphones to 1.78 lakh Class XII students in the state by November. About 50,000 of these phones will be distributed on Wednesday.

The caption ‘Captain Smart Connect’ and a picture of the Chief Minister will be affixed on the back of the phone. The government’s e-service app is provided by installing it on the phone. The second phase of the phones will be delivered soon, an official said.
