New Delhi: Former IAS officers Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu took charge as new members of the Election Commission today. Their names were recommended to the President by a committee chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Congress Lok Sabha leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary as members.
It is indicated that the Lok Sabha election dates may be announced today. It is reported that the election will be held in seven phases. The commission members had completed their tour of all the states to assess the election related preparations.
In the elections, BJP announced candidates for 257 constituencies while Congress announced candidates for 82 seats. Elections are being held for 543 Lok Sabha seats.
