A joint statement by six parties has called for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. The statement said that it would fight to restore the status quo before last August. They have also decided to initiate discussions in this regard.

The statement was signed by National Conference leaders Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah, PDP leader Mahbooba Mufti, CPM central committee member Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami and People’s Conference leader Sajjad Lone. Members of the mainstream opposition gathered at the residence of National Conference President Farooq Abdullah yesterday. The alliance was announced under the name Janasakhyam.

The Center had on August 5 last year repealed Article 370 and Article 35A, which guaranteed autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir. Prior to this, all the key leaders were detained. Many were released at various stages after much criticism. Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti was released from custody two days ago. Following this, the opposition parties reconvened.
