Heavy Rain Alert in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry; Schools and Colleges Closed

Chennai: Following a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, heavy rain alerts have been issued for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Schools and colleges in several districts are closed today. Chennai, Chengalpattu, and Cuddalore have declared a holiday for educational institutions today, while Puducherry has announced closures for both today and tomorrow.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal is moving north-northwest. It is expected to make landfall between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram near the Puducherry coast as a deep depression by Saturday morning. Widespread rainfall is anticipated across Tamil Nadu over the next three days, although the cyclone warning has been withdrawn.

The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall on Friday and Saturday in districts including Chennai, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Ariyalur, and Thanjavur, as well as in Puducherry.

In response, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy held meetings to assess preparations for addressing potential rain-related damage.
